WHAT IS MAOSHAN?

Maoshan is the name of a folk school of magic that developed in Southern China, particularly on the Sichuan Plateau, an area famed for its shamanistic practices and folk witchcraft.

There does tend to be some confusion among those who first come to Daoism, as there is a tendency to be only familiar with the more orthodox schools of Daoism such as Quanzhen, Zhengyi and others.

In fact Maoshan is a folk school of magic, alchemy and divination that was preserved within the private sector, particularly among certain families, as was Jasper Lake Maoshan School.

Jasper Lake Maoshan was developed in the Sichuan but spread to other areas such as Guandong and Hunan.

Jasper Lake remains a private and closed door practice only admitting a few students who are willing to take up the work. Training the full system can take up to ten years.

Training includes aspects such as personal development using methods of neigong, inner work , as well as ritual methods of communing with and interacting with Gods, Immortals, Spirits and Ancestors.

There is also training in the arts of Medicine, Fengshui, Astrology, Numerology, Qimen Dun Jia, Da Liu Ren, Tai Yi, Palm and Face Reading and of course the more famous magical work Maoshan has become famous for.

Is Magic Real?

Magic is often a controversial subject and hard to pin down with a verbal definition.

Magic is the use and development of , and involvement with those forces that lie behind the veil of physical matter to hasten one's development towards self actualising the spiritual nature of the individual and to offer a service of healing. Healing can include such things as poverty and ill fortune , protection of life and so forth.

About Jason Read

Jason Read brought Jasper Lake Maoshan from China, training in Yue Yang in Hunan Province under the auspices of Master Liang. With permission and licensing via the Chinese Daoist Society, we decided to offer courses in Maoshan for those who feel a calling to learn the Maoshan Arts and help preserve a centuries old tradition.

To this end Jason is engaged in writing a series of books on the topic of Chinese folk Magic, much of which has never been seen in print either in Chinese or English.

Why is it Secret?

We are generally a closed door but we consider all students by application. We are not 'gate keepers' and in fact we have and still continue to publish works on Chinese Folk Magic.

However some practices require transmission or passing of lineage (chuan) to be effective.

Secrecy also preserves the integrity of the system itself and ensures the student is safe. As is well known some practices utilised by Maoshan can be highly dangerous without supervision.

TRAINING SYSTEM

THE PATH OF THE MAOSHAN.

There are 108 Methods under the Sanshan Altar and all follow the Way of the Five Thunder Law of the Supreme Patriarch of Maoshan.

The Five Thunder Law was passed by the Hu family.

Hu Fa Wang. Hu Xiu Hua and Hu Ya Hui.

The Maoshan passed through many families, the most well known being the Fa family, the Ma family who created the Liuren Gate of teaching, the Guo family who gave the methods of the Zhen Xin Pai or True Heart Teaching.

Shengong is defined as magical skill, the divine art.

Shengong manifests in two forms.

a. Zi Shengong. Magical Skill manifesting from the self.

b. Ta Shengong. Magical Skill manifesting from the non-self.

The neophyte in Maoshan always begins with Ta Shengong for he or she does not have the capability or knowledge to manifest anything magical by themselves. (This is a difficult lesson to learn especially those from western traditions used to the idea of immediate self development. It probably also explains why 99% of so called magicians achieve nothing tangible and resort to psychological models of magic.)

Ta Shenfa is also called Tongshen Fa, the child-body method. The neophyte is literally a child that relies on the spirits and gods to feed him and nourish him spiritually. IN ESSENCE YOU MUST BECOME A VESSEL THROUGH WHICH THE SPIRITS AND GODS ACT AND MANIFEST THEIRPOWERS. This process is transformative and leads to , in conjunction with magical and alchemical work, to profound changes. Subject to superior spiritual forces , the spiritual fires burn away the mortal parts and leave residual ideas, powers and so forth, giving the magician an increasingly powerful magical and spiritual noumenon.

At this stage the neophyte exhibits skills, abilities and knowledge he cannot possibly understand nor emulate on his own steam. This will change in due course.

In time and with consistent and persistent work , learning various altars, the transformation allows powers to manifest by his own efforts. He reaches an independent state of Zi Shenfa.

Our Lineage

Jasper Lake Maoshan dates back as a concrete organisation to the Ming Dynasty though its roots are much older, probably in the local shamanistic traditions. As well as native Chinese Practices it has absorbed elements of Malaysian and even Thai traditions as well as those many would consider Buddhist.

It is with some concern that the art is dying out in the East, particularly due to the political situation in China, that the Jasper Lake Tradition has been brought to Europe, the United Kingdom and the USA, where it can continue to be taught with integrity and without interference from mainland governing bodies.

Master Liang

Our immediate Master and 18th Generation holder of the Yaochi Maoshan School

Sister Wen

Maoshan lineage holder and Mistress of the Immortal Fox Lineage.
